As I’ve come to identify the style + the look I want to achieve with my photography this past year or so, my lens lineup has definitely evolved.  Throughout 2011, I bounced between lens categories – originally thinking I’d want to go all primes, then I thought – no, I want zooms for versatility, and ultimately I’m back to primes.  It took a while to finally figure out who I was as a photographer and what I wanted my work to look like.  So now that I know this, I can confidently build my lens lineup.  That being said, I have always loved the look of a wide angle shot.  My shooting style really lends itself well to wide angle lenses, so I’m starting to build my collection of lenses around a few key prime wide angle lenses that I adore.  The first is this lens – the next feature in my Gear Series – the Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II.

I first rented this lens back in October 2011 after hearing such good things about it.  At the time, I was seriously considering going the all prime lens route, but I wanted to rent some just to be sure.  For those of you that don’t know, prime lenses are a huge investment and big decisions like this should not be taken lightly.  Every piece of equipment you invest in – but especially lenses – should be a strategic investment, thoughtfully considered, and something you know will help define your style, brand + photography.  Unfortunately, some of the lenses I had acquired early on in my business just weren’t giving me the results I wanted.  You know – the lenses I just had to have because someone else said so.  Yeah… not so much.  After I tested out the 24mm lens, I knew I was in trouble.  It was awesome and exactly what I needed, so I decided to sell off two of my other lenses in order to buy this lens.  Pricey?  Yes.  Worth it?  YES!

One of the things that I absolutely love about this lens is that it is fast.  I can shoot in really dark lighting situations and still get great looking images.  I also love the 1.4 aperture – it is just amazing and the bokeh it creates is stunning.  Also, this lens is sharp – even wide open, which is where I generally am when shooting.  I love love love the color, clarity, and depth of field that this lens affords me.  It is truly a perfect match for my style and it fits into my lens lineup seamlessly.

Below are a few of my favorite images taken with this lens.  This lens has quickly become one of my go-to lenses and paired together with my 50 f/1.4 lens, it is part of a wonderful combination of prime lenses that have helped define my style and brand.  There is nothing like it and hopefully you can see why I fell in love.
